Mobile OS – The Most Popular

With all the hype surrounding the latest iPhone, it’s easy to forget that the world leader in mobile technology who dominate the market is from one of the worlds smallest countries – Finalnd. The most successfule Operating System for Mobiles is Symbian (from the Psion Epoc start) with over 50% of the market.

  1. Symbian [Finland] (open public license)
  2. BlackBerry / RIM (Research In Motion) [Canada] (closed source, proprietary)
  3. Apple iPhone OS / iOS [USA] (closed source, proprietary)
  4. Windows Mobile [USA] (closed source, proprietary)
  5. Google Android [USA] (open source, GPL)
  6. Palm WebOS  / PalmPilot OS [USA] (closed source, proprietary)
  7. Linux [Finland] (open source, GPL)
  8. BADA / Samsung [Korea]  (closed source, proprietary)
  9. MeeGo / Motorola/Intel [USA]  (open source, GPL)
  10. Maemo / Nokia for tablets [Finland]   (open source, GPL)
  11. LiMo – Linux for Mobile devies [Consortium]   (open source, GPL)

You will notice how far behind America is in developing the most modern operating systems. While Apple Inc. have gained the most over recent years, it is clear that the European Operating Systems hold mOSt of the market for mobile devices. The first version of the Symbian operating system, called EPOC was produced by Psion, complete with touch screen and mobile email in the 1990′s on the Psion Series 5. This was on the Oregon Scientific handheld devices in the US.

To prove the point, most Americans have given up calling their phone a ‘cell’ and are referring to it by the European term ‘mobile’The iPad also uses the iOS and may well be able to make inroads into Nokia’s dominant Symbian platform. With the launch of  BlackBerry OS 6 in 2010 with touch capability that has lon been asked for looks like cementing a stable position for the business oriented ‘crackberry’.
